CS2 Update - New maps and visual improvements

05 August 2023, 14:53

While CS2 remains available to only a limited number of players, Valve continues to develop the new version of CS:GO, which is nothing short of exciting, as each update brings us closer to a release that will be open to all. The next update for CS2 was released on August 3rd, and it brings several noteworthy new features.

Map Updates

First of all, the composition of the

maps

in matchmaking has changed. Instead of the updated Vertigo and Overpass, players will now be able to compete on Ancient and Anubis. Since both maps appeared in the matchmaking of the main version of CS:GO relatively recently, there was no need to significantly rework the graphics. The main visual update was an improvement in water rendering. In addition, physical effects have been added to the water display: for example, the sounds when different weapons fall into the water are now different. Another cosmetic addition is also connected with water: chickens got the ability to swim.

It is interesting that among the maps included in the current competitive mappool, Inferno has never appeared in CS2. Nor was she in the trailer for the new version of the game. It is possible that it will be replaced by some other card in the future. Given that the first CS2 championships are still many months away, the developers have plenty of time to test how the various maps function in the new version, make any necessary fixes, and decide on the final map pool.

Other changes

Although Wingman mode was quite popular in CS2, Valve disabled it in the August 3 update, presumably to make some fixes.  Players are hoping it will return soon.

Another small but notable update to Counter-Strike 2 – is the fact that the C4 explosive now has an inspection animation. This probably means that there may be skins for this item in the future as well. In addition, several animations related to the player's movement on the map have been improved.

Another CS2 update has given data miners a reason to once again search the game's files for hints of potential innovations. It is possible that players will see global changes to the matchmaking system in CS2, which will become more complex. Developers can take advantage of the experience of third-party platforms like FaceIT and implement a similar rating system into the game. In addition, there may be new resources for newcomers to the game as well. It is likely that the developers expect that after the release of the game in open beta it will be interested in those who have not played CS:GO before, which means that they will need to show them the basics of gameplay. For this purpose the game may have a tutorial with training missions and matches with the participation of bots.

We can only wait for Counter-Strike 2 to finally be released and become available to all players. So far, only a few lucky owners of invites can evaluate all these innovations in practice.
