Jakub «kuben» Gurczynski, who was the coach of the Virtus.Pro team for five years, spoke about what reasons, in his opinion, led to the team's decline. Under his guidance she performed from 2015 to 2019, and in late 2016 – early 2017 she reached the peak of her success, briefly rising to No. 1 in the world rankings. Jakub recalls that during this period the team worked very well together, the players enjoyed what they were doing and prepared intensively for the performances.
Although many believe that the high salaries that the players received during this period were one of the reasons for the loss of motivation, the coach is of the opinion that this is not the main reason. More important was that players started to feel unequal, due to some getting more bonuses than others. Distractions from other games also played their part: one of the team members was criticized for spending too much time on PUBG.
Another reason was a failed substitution strategy, with the help of which Gurczynski tried to improve the situation in 2017-2018. He now admits that if he had consulted a sports psychologist even then, he would have acted differently. In 2019, the coach again tried to turn things around, this time by recruiting an entirely new squad of Polish players. However, this attempt was unsuccessful because not all players managed to show sufficient motivation and adapt to the training regime.
Now Jakub Gurczynski plans to continue coaching – already with another team.
